  How to reach the Department

Massimo Delledonne received his Ph.D. from Università Cattolica del S. C. in 1994.  During 1995-1998 he visited Chris Lamb at the Salk Institute for Biological Studiesin California, discovering the function of nitric oxide in plant disease resistance. In 2001, he joined the University of Verona as Associate Professor of Plant Genetics (SSD Agr/07) and a few year later he joined the genomic revolution by adopting the new technologies that Next Generation Sequencing was offering to microbial, plant, animal and human biologists.

Massimo Delledonne is currently Full Professor of Genetics (SSD Bio/18). He manages a vigorous research program that emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to understanding plant and human biology. His own expertise is in the areas of genetics, molecular biology and genomics, and collaborates with researchers in diverse fields, including bioinformatics, microbiology and plant genomics, and medicine.

Massimo Delledonne has been supported by the EMBO Young Investigator Program
Member of the International Cancer Genome Consortium
Member of the Understand Your Genome program

Understand Your Genome (UYG) is part of a movement promoted by Illumina towards a better understanding of our DNA and its implications for healthcare.I sequenced myself in 2011, and in 2013 I've joined the Understand Your Genome (UYG) program, a movement promoted by Illumina towards a better understanding of our DNA with the mission of accelerating a true era of precision medicine. I've served UYG as Key Opinion Leader (KOL) to help catalyzing a cross-professional community united to responsibly yet urgently accelerate the adoption of genomics in healthcare and I'm fully involved in educating and motivating the medical community to precision medicine: coupling established clinical–pathological indexes with state-of-the-art molecular profiling to create diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic strategies precisely tailored to each patient's requirements.

I'm also particularly active on developing a mobile genetic/genomic lab that can be brought were samples are instead of bringing samples to the lab, especially for analyses related to species identification for biodiversity studies and wildlife conservation. Our mobile DNA sequencing laboratoryt was proven successful for sequencing in extreme field conditions, such as in the tropical rainforests of Tanzania, Congo and Borneo.
We are now part of Taxon Expedition, an organization which focuses on education and biodiversity discovery harnessing the power of citizen science, and the next goal is to train citizen scientists to sequence wild species in the field
